MARCH 2017
This enchanting little downtown eatery has been captivating Island locals since 2003, the same
year its owners Ladislav and Terry Klos met. Terry lovingly teases that she “married him to get the
[family] recipes,” but one taste of their painstakingly handcrafted dishes and you might not think
that is entirely unreasonable.
A native of Czechoslovakia, Ladislav Klos does double-duty as the owner of a local construction
company and is responsible for transforming a vacant lot into a dreamy, vintage European
courtyard that plays gracious host to this delectable dining experience. The scenic venue is also available beyond regular business
hours for private parties of up to 75 people.
The Café’s revolving menu highlights the best of Eastern European cuisine, including German, Hungarian, Russian, and of course
Czechoslovakian dishes, many of which are the marriage-worthy recipes that were passed to Ladislav by his mother. “Everything is
handmade, the old-fashioned way, the hard way. There is no rushing this food,” says Terry.
Because of the time-consuming preparations, only a handful of dishes are offered each evening, many of which often sell out. As
for dessert, “We also have an incredibly good baker over there,” says Ladislov, pointing to his wife whose signature product is a
homemade bread pudding.
Recently, Courtyard Café has added gluten-free options to their offerings, and for the Lenten season are offering grilled fish every
Friday. “Grilled fish—not fried fish,” Ladislav emphasizes, then laughs, “My mother would never dream of making anything fried.”
Courtyard Café
is located at 2519 Market Street. Dinner is served Thursday, Friday and Saturday Nights from 5:30pm-9:30pm,
beer and wine available. Call 409.763.3845 for more information.
