Mural Masterpiece
at Maceo’s Spice & Imports
Now all muffuletta-lovers and loyal patrons of Maceo’s can enjoy their lunch with a
stunning view. While taste buds do their usual happy dance around bursts of Italian
spices, the eyes will grow wide while the mind attempts to wrap itself around this
brilliant work of art.
Self-taught street artist Daniel Anguilu recently completed a graffiti masterpiece
on Maceo’s eastern exterior wall that exudes a colorful mix of passion and rebellion
interlaced with vibrant colors and dreamlike shapes, but he did not do it all on his own.
Fortunately for Galveston, unless Daniel was ornamenting city walls in Mexico, Peru,
Spain, Italy, or his hometown of Houston with colorful, large-scale aerosol masterpieces,
he was spending a little time sharing his artistic wisdom with the Island community. With
the help of eager students from the local Bernardo de Galvez Academy and through
efforts of the Galveston Arts Center, Anguilu painted alongside Galvestonians, collectively
producing new ideas as the intentionally unplanned mural progressed into an inspirational
piece of art.
“It’s about getting the community involved and providing students with the opportunity
to build a solid background in art so that they can begin their career at an early age,”
says Anguilu, “They are learning how to build relationships and work in a professional
environment.”
Stop by Maceo’s to enjoy delicious lunch specials such as the blackened shrimp po’boy,
shrimp and crab gumbo, and fresh shrimp salad, and revel in Anguilu’s masterpiece.
