The craft beer culture is ever changing as breweries come and go or reinvent themselves. Those of us who travel a lot love to visit the local breweries at every stop.

We collect breweries the way other people collect postcards or T-shirts. What better way is there to relax on a vacation than to sip a beer at a local brewery, chatting with locals, getting the real information on where to go and what to do?

It turns out the rest of Texas has noticed what visitors to the island have known for years. In 2024, the Texas Craft Brewers Guild officially named Galveston an Early Adopter Craft Beer Destination as part of its Brew City, Texas program - a recognition reserved for communities with an established, standout beer scene. With that honor in mind, let’s take a look at who is brewing and pouring on the island.

Galveston Island Brewing | 8423 Stewart Road
Galveston Island Brewing is the island’s most established craft brewery, founded in 2014 by Mark and Liesel Dell’Osso after Mark’s award winning homebrews convinced them it was time to scale up. What began as a small coastal brewhouse has grown into one of the region’s most recognizable craft beer brands, known across Texas for its relaxed island vibe and its flagship beer, Tiki Wheat.

The brewery sits just off the Seawall and offers one of the most welcoming family friendly spaces on the island. “We want to see you, your family, your kids, your pets, and even your Grandma,” Mark says - and the layout reflects that philosophy.

The large outdoor area includes a playground and shaded seating, while the indoor taproom provides a quieter, more intimate space. A second floor balcony overlooks the brewhouse, giving beer lovers a behind the scenes view of the operation.

Galveston Island Brewing runs an 18 tap wall featuring only their own beers, all brewed on site. While summer brings a lineup of pale ales and crisp Mexican lagers, the brewery is equally known for its bold seasonal releases.

Their Samson Series - named for the Dell’Osso family’s beloved dog - showcases barrel aged stouts, including the recent Samson in a Barrel 2026, aged in Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels and clocking in at 12% ABV.

The kitchen serves what the team calls “Family Bar Food,” from giant pretzels and pizzas to wings and the ever popular Muffaletta sourced from Galveston’s own Maceo’s. Taproom only releases and special cause brews appear throughout the year, including Gulf Ghost, a red ale honoring the island’s ghost wolf population.

With its mix of coastal charm, award winning beer, and a space designed for everyone, Galveston Island Brewing remains a cornerstone of the island’s craft beer scene - and a major reason Galveston earned its Brew City, Texas designation.

Naked Iguana Brewery | 1828 Strand
Just steps from the historic Strand District, Naked Iguana Brewery has quickly become a downtown gathering spot - the kind of place where locals claim their favorite barstool and visitors feel like regulars by the second round.

Richard and Tracy Rennison opened the brewery in November 2023, transforming a former retail space into a relaxed, neighborhood-style taproom and beer garden that channels the spirit of a classic Texas icehouse.

Richard has been brewing since 1996, when his parents gave him a homebrew kit for Christmas. After retiring from a high-stress career, he and Tracy moved to Galveston in 2019, and when the Strand location became available, the timing felt right.

Years of garage brewing and research turned into a full-scale brewery, complete with a 20-tap wall and a loyal following.

Walk through the front door and the crew greets you with the kind of easy warmth that makes you feel like a regular, even on your first visit. The space is family- and pet-friendly, and over time they’ve welcomed everything from dogs and cats to a duck and even a goat named Hercules.

Their newly added Beer Garden, with its roll-up garage doors and communal tables, brings an old-school icehouse vibe to the heart of downtown.

Naked Iguana’s tap list leans approachable and refreshing, with Battleship Blonde standing out as Richard’s signature beer - an easy-drinking blonde ale with a light malt profile and crisp finish.

Their newest release, Key Lime Pie Sour, delivers a bright, puckering lime punch balanced by a soft sweetness on the back end. With 20 taps, there’s always a mix of core favorites, seasonal brews, and experimental batches.

The brewery has quickly woven itself into the fabric of downtown life. If there’s an event on The Strand, you’ll likely find Richard, Tracy, and a crowd of their regulars participating - from Mardi Gras parades to charity fundraisers.

They frequently brew special-release beers to support local organizations, donating a portion of proceeds to causes across the island. And thanks to their partnership with Coastal Grill across the street, guests can order anything from the restaurant’s menu and have it delivered straight to their table.

In just a short time, Naked Iguana Brewery has become a true Strand-side hangout - warm, welcoming, and unmistakably Galveston.

Coastal Star Brewing Company | 2021 Strand
Sitting right on the Historic Strand, Coastal Star Brewing Company blends the charm of a downtown restaurant with the ambition of a boutique brewpub. Sidewalk tables offer front-row views of parades and people-watching, while inside, the space still carries the welcoming energy Frank and Teffany Caruso cultivated when the building housed their original Hub Cap Grill.

The Carusos’ passion for beer began long before the rebrand. Teffany developed house beers for the restaurant years ago, crafting recipes that quickly became customer favorites.

As their interest in brewing grew, the couple shifted toward a full brewpub identity, adding on-site Texas BBQ, inventive po’boys, and a lineup of house-made sodas, including old-fashioned root beer and vanilla crème.

Today, Coastal Star pours from 17 taps, featuring a mix of local Texas beers and select offerings from as far as Mexico and Germany. Their own beers are beginning to take center stage, with four house brews set to debut soon and a long-term goal of expanding to ten.

Until their on-site system is fully operational, they’ve partnered with Mountain Wave Brewing in Pearland to produce their recipes.

Their signature beer, Texas Lavender Double IPA, is a hazy, aromatic IPA built from Teffany’s original recipe - inspired by the lavender margaritas that became a hit at the restaurant.

Fans are also eagerly awaiting the return of Galveston Blood Moon Hazy, a blood-orange variation, and Cake Haze, a pink fruited gose modeled after their popular champagne cake. (Originally called Pretty in Pink, the name changed only because men refused to order it.)

With its blend of creative food, evolving beer program, and a prime Strand location, Coastal Star Brewing Company has become a destination for both locals and visitors looking for something a little different in Galveston’s craft beer landscape.

Devil And The Deep Brewery | 2626 Market Street
In the West Market District - a growing extension of downtown that locals know well and visitors are just beginning to discover - Devil and the Deep Brewery has found its new home.

Owner and brewer Eric “E.C.” Walker reopened the taproom here after moving the brewing operation from its original Postoffice Street location to League City in 2025, creating a relaxed, neighborhood-style space with indoor seating and sidewalk tables.

The taproom has an easygoing, garage-hangout feel, the kind of place where you can settle in for an afternoon without realizing how much time has passed. Free parking along Market Street makes it an effortless stop for anyone exploring the district.

While Devil and the Deep offers a range of American styles - from pale ales to stouts - Eric’s true passion lies in Belgian and German-inspired artisan ales. His lineup shifts with the seasons, reflecting a brewer who enjoys experimentation as much as tradition.

Their signature beer, Local Legend Brown Ale, earned a silver medal on Untappd last year and remains one of the most approachable, easy-drinking browns on the island, with smooth caramel and chocolate notes.

The taproom favorite, Bathymetry IPA, sits at a friendly 7% ABV and greets you with floral, hoppy aromatics before delivering a clean, balanced finish that keeps regulars coming back.

Devil and the Deep continues to be a cornerstone of Galveston’s craft beer identity - a place where the brewing is thoughtful, the atmosphere is unpretentious, and every visit feels like dropping by a friend’s place for a beer.

There’s no better way to understand a place than through its breweries, and Galveston’s taprooms offer a journey all their own - from beach-day blondes to historic-district hazies to old-world ales that feel like stepping back in time.
