Folks will be pleased to hear that the rooftop bar at one of Galveston’s premier hotels, The Tremont House, is now open again for business. Galveston Monthly sat down recently with Mitchell Willingham, Director of Sales and Marketing, to discuss the long-awaited reopening of the only rooftop bar in Historic Downtown Galveston.
Willingham encourages everyone to experience the newly reimagined spot with stunning views and expertly crafted cocktails.
“Whether you're relaxing after a day of island exploration or celebrating a special event, our rooftop oasis offers the perfect setting,” he said. “With a breathtaking view of the Gulf and historic district, join us for an evening of relaxation, sophistication, and the best sunsets in town. We look forward to welcoming you.”
The rooftop space has been completely transformed, boasting a stylish urban modern chic atmosphere complemented by nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Two walls feature accordion-style, full-glass doors that fold effortlessly, while large windows form the third wall, flooding the interior with natural light.
The centerpiece of the renovation is a three-sided, full-service bar with seating for 13 guests, plus accommodations for two guests with disabilities. Inside the glass-enclosed area, 40 seats are arranged with a mix of tables for two or four and cozy couch setups for larger groups.
The outdoor seating area is equally inviting, bringing the total combined capacity - both indoors and outdoors - to an impressive 140 guests.
“I think our biggest customer base will be the community residents. Renovations took over two years, and this community was very gracious and patient; we can’t wait to welcome them back. And, of course, we are happy to entertain our guests staying at the property or those visiting Galveston.
“The original rooftop bar was just a makeshift mobile bar pushed onto the rooftop that provided drinks to guests. Over time, the management realized that more and more guests were enjoying it, and it became a popular spot and a great addition to the property as a whole,” Willingham said.
“The property owners decided an enclosed bar would be better suited during inclement weather. As Galvestonians know, some days, it can be very hot; others, it can be downright chilly. There is still ample seating outside for those who prefer that. You have a fantastic view no matter where you sit.”
Executive Chef Grant Marion and Korry McElroy, Director of Food and Beverage, are the visionary duo behind the exceptional experience at The Rooftop Bar. Together, they have designed a sharable food and cocktail menu that perfectly complements the chic ambiance, blending their expertise and passion to create an elevated and unforgettable dining experience.
The curated menu features an array of enticing small bites and shareable options for both lunch and dinner, including highlights such as crab cakes, seared ahi tuna, wagyu beef sliders, baked goat cheese, and fried duck wings.
Guests can enjoy the same thoughtfully crafted drink menu offered at The Toujouse Bar, located adjacent to the hotel lobby on the first floor. Signature cocktails include the timeless Old Fashioned and the Girl Named Violet - a sophisticated twist on the classic French 75, made with the bar’s own Butterfly Peaflower-infused gin.
“The Rooftop Bar is dedicated to offering exceptional food and service to locals and visitors, filling a key need in the Strand Historic District,” Willingham said.
“With a focus on quality and hospitality, we created a space that is very welcoming for everyone. There is a great view wherever you sit - the harbor, the historic district, downtown Galveston, and surrounding neighborhoods.”
For now, The Rooftop Bar will continue to operate on a first-come, first-served basis, allowing guests to enjoy the space without hassle. Currently, the largest party the hotel can sit together is 10 guests.
“Once the initial excitement surrounding the opening has settled, we will reevaluate the possibility of accepting reservations and hosting larger groups. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and look forward to welcoming guests to The Rooftop Bar,” he said.
Bringing over 24 years of experience in the hotel industry, Willingham has excelled in key markets such as Miami Beach, Los Angeles, and Scottsdale, with a focus on serving as a Director of Sales and Marketing.
“I’ve led growth at various properties, from luxury resorts to boutique hotels, by implementing sales initiatives, fostering client relationships, and driving revenue.”
“My background has given me a deep understanding of the hospitality industry, allowing me to deliver strong results and contribute to the success of every property I’ve worked with,” he said.
The Tremont House is located at 2300 Ship Mechanic Row Street. The Rooftop Bar is open Sunday through Thursday from noon to midnight and Friday and Saturday, from noon to 1am.
