Water’s Edge Digital Photography features the work of co-founders Nikki Andrus and Stephen Thompson and has garnered the attention of those who live on Galveston Island as well as those living beyond the island’s shores.

Together the photographic duo of seven years has transformed their love for photography into a thriving business. Based in Galveston, Texas, the two showcase the island’s beauty.

Although they initially displayed their work at The Emporium at Eibands and later at The Naked Mermaid, Water’s Edge Digital Photography is now an exclusively online operation. Despite the absence of a brick-and-mortar gallery, the online platform allows them to reach a broader audience, selling their work in various formats, from prints to canvas.

NIKKI ANDRUS Growing up, Andrus was inspired by her mother who captured countless family moments with a camera. This early exposure to photography led her to pick up a camera at a young age, developing a hobby that would later evolve into a full-time career.

Her fresh perspectives are captured in stunning images of wildlife, landscapes and unique local sights.

Her journey into professional photography wasn’t immediate but grew organically, she said.

"[Thompson and I] discovered that we both enjoyed photography," she said of the early days with her business partner.

“We would post pictures on our personal Facebook pages, and people started asking if our photos were for sale. After months of inquiries, I asked Stephen, ‘Why not?’ If other people can sell their photos, why not us?"

Andrus and Thompson seized the opportunity, and Water’s Edge Digital Photography was born.

Andrus’ connection to Galveston Island is evident in her photography. She speaks fondly of the rich opportunities the island offers.

“I love shooting birds, dolphins, animals, and wildlife. Dolphins are fun but very difficult to capture,” Andrus said, adding her spontaneous approach means that a simple walk along the beach can spark inspiration. “You never know what you might find.”

Though both she and Thompson share a love for photography, Andrus prefers a more hands-on approach, while Thompson often uses a drone to capture aerial shots.

“Stephen’s drone shots and videos are awesome,” she admits, “but I am not as good with technology as he is.”

For her, the magic of photography lies in the intimate, close-up details, particularly of her favorite subjects - animals. She especially likes photographing cats. “They have such personality and never complain.”

“To me, photography is capturing a moment in time,” she said. “That moment will never come again, and when you capture it, you have it forever.”

Recently, the couple embarked on a trip to Colorado to photograph the Perseid meteor shower, a once-in-a-lifetime event. Although the weather didn’t cooperate, the trip still provided Andrus with plenty of photographic opportunities.

“The mountains were incredible, and the whole trip was a great experience. I look forward to the next,” she said.

STEPHEN THOMPSON Thompson’s love of photography and fascination for aerial perspectives led him to create stunning drone photography that captures Galveston Island from a seagull’s eye view. His photographic journey began early in life, but his move to Galveston ignited a deeper passion.

“I’ve loved photography since I was a child,” Thompson said. “I was the only one to bring a camera to boot camp in the U.S. Army. I became the class photographer.”

Over the years, his self-taught skills evolved, driven by curiosity and the joy of capturing nature and landscapes. This passion led him to experiment with drone technology, starting with a second-hand drone in 2016.

Since then, drone photography has become a cornerstone of his work. One of Thompson’s most notable accomplishments is obtaining FAA certification, a requirement for commercial drone work.

The certification process has allowed him to take on professional projects, including his regular contributions to Galveston Monthly Magazine, most notably his cover shot of the August 2024 issue.

“Getting the certification was a big step towards becoming a drone pilot. As a professional, it shows that I know the rules, the limitations, and capabilities of the drone,” he said.

His disciplined approach to safety and compliance ensures he captures stunning aerial shots without compromising safety. He meticulously goes through a detailed checklist before every flight, making sure his drone is in peak condition and all possible risks are addressed.

Galveston Island, with its stunning coastal scenery and iconic landmarks, has been the perfect backdrop for Thompson’s creative exploration. Drone-captured images of Galveston reveal a breathtaking, expansive view of the island's natural beauty and architectural charm.

The drone perspective showcases the geometric patterns of the streets and the blend of modern infrastructure with 19th-century Victorian architecture.

It captures Galveston’s lush green spaces, iconic seawall, and long piers extending into the Gulf. It also captures a sense of its unique barrier-island geography surrounded by shimmering water on all sides.

Thompson’s love for aerial photography was sparked when he saw a drone video of Galveston’s Ohana Dog Surfing Competition in 2016.

Drone technology has certainly revolutionized the photography industry, and Thompson is no stranger to the challenges it presents. Weather conditions and FAA regulations are just a few of the obstacles drone photographers must navigate, he said.

Thompson finds immense satisfaction in capturing the island from above, offering a perspective few get to experience. His favorite spots include the east end, where the Bolivar Lighthouse and ferry transport provide striking views, and the west end, where the San Luis Pass and fishing boats create picture-perfect scenes.

His photographs often tell stories of Galveston’s ever-changing landscape, from tranquil sunrises over the Gulf of Mexico to bustling scenes of cruise ships arriving in port.

As drone technology continues to advance, Thompson sees exciting possibilities for the future of aerial photography. Lighter, more portable drones with improved camera systems allow photographers like him to push creative boundaries.

His dream shot? Capturing a rainbow in the sky with the historic Elissa under full sail, passing near the Pleasure Pier. He considers this a fitting tribute to both his love for the island and his pursuit of unique perspectives.

THE CREATIVE DUO Through Water’s Edge Digital Photography, Andrus and Thompson share their love for photography, offering a glimpse into Galveston’s beauty from a vantage point few can replicate.

“Sharing our little piece of paradise is the greatest feeling in the world,” said Thompson.

Running Water’s Edge Digital Photography as a duo requires a balance of creativity and business savvy. Thompson handles much of the technical work, including managing their social media pages and website, while both contribute their photos.

Despite their different strengths, the couple’s partnership thrives on their shared passion, creating a harmonious collaboration where each person’s talents shine.
